Heat: the lever you can feel
Sperm production runs a couple of degrees cooler than the rest of you, and modern life is full of things that warm it back up. The science, honestly told.
There's a reason the anatomy is external: sperm production works best a few degrees below body temperature. It is one of the most temperature-sensitive processes in the body - and modern life is a parade of things that quietly warm it back up. This is the lever Kalcius is literally built to measure.
What the evidence says
- Hot baths and saunas are the clearest case. Regular sauna use measurably suppresses sperm count and motility in studies - and the effect reverses within a few months of stopping. That reversibility is the good news hiding in the bad: heat damage to production is mostly temporary.
- Fever does the same thing from the inside. A bad flu can dent a semen analysis for two to three months afterwards - worth remembering before you panic over one poor result.
- Sustained sitting - long drives, desk marathons - raises scrotal temperature simply by closing the airflow. Heated car seats add to it.
- Laptops on laps raise scrotal temperature in studies. The fix costs nothing: table, cushion, anywhere but directly on you.
- Occupational heat - kitchens, foundries, welding, professional driving - shows up in the epidemiology as a real risk factor.
What it means in practice
You don't need to live like a monk. The pattern in the data is that sustained and repeated heat is what suppresses production - the daily sauna habit, the every-evening hot bath, the laptop that lives on your lap. An occasional hot bath is not a crisis.
If you're actively trying to conceive, the pragmatic version is: showers over baths, skip the sauna for a season, laptop on a table, break up long sits. Production takes about three months to fully turn over, so give changes that long to show - see The three-month rule.
What the Clip adds
Everything above is population evidence. The Clip's job is to turn it personal: continuous temperature at the source, so "I sit too much" stops being a guess and becomes a chart with specific hours on it. Heat events land on your device page, and days without one feed the Cool running streak on your levers board.
Heat is the rare fertility lever that responds in weeks, costs nothing to pull, and that you can actually feel yourself pulling. If you only change one habit, make it this one.
